What are the Ciprofloxacin side effects?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic in a group of drugs called fluoroquinolones as is used as a means of fighting bacteria in the body.

You must refrain from using Ciprofloxacin if you are allergic to this medication or if you are allergic to homogenous antibiotics such as Gemifloxacin and Levofloxacin.

Before starting the intake of this medication, you must ensure that you inform your doctor in case you experience heart rhythm disorders, diabetes, kidney or liver diseases, joint problems, trouble breathing, a history of seizures, a history of head injury or a brain tumour or insignificant potassium levels.

You must not take this medication along with dairy products such as milk. You should refrain from using antacids, vitamin supplements or chewable tablets within 6 hours before or 2 hours after the intake of Ciprofloxacin.


What is Ciprofloxacin used for?

Ciprofloxacin is used to treat different types of bacterial infections. It may also be used to prevent or slow anthrax after exposure.

Several bacterial infections affiliated with the bladder, sinus and pneumonia can be treated with the use of Ciprofloxacin. However, this drug is not suitable for treating all kinds of bacterial infections, and it cannot be used to treat viral infections.

Ciprofloxacin is used in order to treat many infections such as bladder infections, kidney infections, Pneumonia, Sinus infections, prostrate infections, severe abdomen infections, Bronchitis, diarrhoea, and typhoid fever. Ciprofloxacin ophthalmic ointment for the eye is used to cure bacterial conjunctivitis.

Ciprofloxacin ear drops are used in treating bacterial infections associated with the outer ear as well as those of the ear canal. This is medically known as acute Otitis Externa.

Not all products of Ciprofloxacin are approved to be used to treat all infections. Moreover, Ciprofloxacin proves to be useful for treating infections only when they arise due to specific types of bacteria since all kinds of bacteria do not effectively respond to it.

Ciprofloxacin is not affective in curing infections caused by viruses, such as the common cold or the flu.

Common side effects of Ciprofloxacin

Taking Ciprofloxacin may result in causing swelling or tearing of a tendon, particularly in the Achilles’ heel tendon. You must stop the intake of this medication and call your doctor immediately if you experience sudden pain or stiffness in your joints.

Most people are able to take this medication without any problems. However, some people do experience side effects during treatment. Although most side effects are not extremely serious, you should consult your doctor immediately if you develop seizures, hallucinations, or other potentially serious problems.

Common Side Effects of Ciprofloxacin include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, rashes, abnormal liver functioning, stomach problems, stuffy nose, stomach upset, blurred visions, sleep problems, asthma, increased sensitivity to sunlight, involuntary eye movement, dizziness and joint of back pain.

However, the use of Ciprofloxacin has been associated with serious side effects. Some of these side effects are life threatening. Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), a fatal condition of the skin, is a potential side effect. Another side-effect is tendon rupture which is an extremely agonizing side effect that needs proper surgery and long periods of rehabilitation. Other critical side effects include seizures, depression, numbness or unusual pain in parts of the body and fast heartbeats.

Ciprofloxacin side effects on children

Children are at the greatest risk of suffering from side-effects of this medication.

Children taking Ciprofloxacin have an increased risk for tendon problems.
The most commonly reported side effects in children include stomach problems, diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, stuffy nose, fever, asthma, rash and abdominal pains.

Ciprofloxacin can also make one more sensitive to sunlight. Even small periods of exposure to sunlight can cause severe sunburn, rash and itching. Therefore, it is not recommended to give Ciprofloxacin to children since they are usually exposed to sunlight for long periods of time.

Furthermore, children are not recommended this medication because of the risk of permanent injury to the musculoskeletal system.

The most commonly reported side-effects experienced by children are deviating liver tests, differences in white blood cell counts, nausea and vomiting.

Ciprofloxacin should strictly not be given to infants as at their age, they are not able to acquire the enzymes which are necessary in order to metabolize the drug.

Ciprofloxacin side effects on men

Men taking Ciprofloxacin are at an increased risk of experiencing a ruptured or swollen tendon, leading to a painful condition called tendinitis.

Ciprofloxacin can cause an imbalance in the digestive system. Women may feel sick in her stomach and vomiting may occur. This may result in a loss of appetite since it may be difficult to eat normal amounts of food when feeling nauseous.

Ciprofloxacin side effects on pregnant women

Women who are pregnant or lactating should refrain from taking Ciprofloxacin since this medication can severely affect her baby.

Ciprofloxacin can also interact with the drug tizanidine, so patients taking this medication should not take Ciprofloxacin. Additionally, Ciprofloxacin can cause the levels of several chemotherapy medications to rise, potentially causing more severe side effects.

Ciprofloxacin is excreted into human milk. Ciprofloxacin should not be taken by pregnant women unless the potential benefits justify the potential risk to both, the foetus and the mother.

Ciprofloxacin side effects on the elderly

Ciprofloxacin side effects in the elderly generally tend to be extremely severe.

Since the elderly generally have a weak immune system, they are more susceptible to facing the side-effects of using Ciprofloxacin.
