Side effects of Endocet are dependent upon the adverse reactions caused by its components which are Acetaminophen and Oxycodone.
In therapeutic range, a mild increase in the level of liver enzymes may be observed in the absence of Jaundice. This increase is reversible when the drug is stopped.
Some patients may show involvement of central nervous system leading to dizziness, excitation and disorientation. It is a hepatotoxic drug which means that is harmful for the liver. Centrilobular necrosis of liver may occur at high doses which can be fatal. Early symptoms which may point out hepatic damage are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. Renal damage may occur along with hepatic damage though cases of renal damage are seen even in the absence of renal damage even at normal doses of acetaminophen which are used in composition of Endocet. Blood dyscrasias such as hemolytic anemia and methemoglobinemia are rare adverse reactions. Dark urine is also a side effect which may require you to get your renal function tests done.
Oxycodone is not tolerated in elderly patients due to its depressing effects on the respiratory system and cardio vascular system. It can trigger the vomiting center which is quite a sensitive part in the brain and can induce vomiting and nausea. It also increases the intracranial pressure which can lead to head ache or blurred vision. Since it depresses the respiratory center, it can exacerbate an asthma attack or severe dyspnea. It can cause a drop in the mean pressure leading to orthostatic hypotension and the person may become unconscious. It can cause constipation so patients with hernia may present with increase in hernial mass. It can cause urinary retention in some individuals.
The most important side effect is that it has addiction potential and some people can use Endocet just out of recreational purposes once they are prescribed this medicine. It can cause hallucinations and seizures as well as severe depression, restlessness, behavioral derangements or dysphoric reactions. It causes physical and psychological dependence.
Withdrawal syndrome can occur in those who stop taking the medicine at once instead of tapering it off. It can also decrease concentration and impairment of cognitive functions. It can induce itching around nose and urticaria.
